To reach the Llanos (“plains”) of San Gregorio or Jaraquemada, now a lively, bustling shopping area, you have to climb up from the Cuatro Esquinas via Calle Julián Torón, Calle Pérez Galdós and Avenida de la Constitución.
Before you get there, you are confronted with the majestic sight of the Church of San Gregorio Taumaturgo, with its neo-Classical design, the focal point of this densely populated shopping district, along with its renovated Plaza de San Gregorio, which has been redesigned and is notable for its bandstand. As you walk through the district, you see buildings of every kind: two-storey houses with stonework in the doors and windows, under semicircular arches, organised vertically. Buildings for the mercantile bourgeoisie where they set up their businesses.
Along the Avenida de la Constitución and adjoining streets there is a wonderful atmosphere of warmth, friendliness and familiarity among shopkeepers, locals and visitors. You can also enjoy a culinary experience full of different aromas, textures and colours by visiting the stalls in Telde Market, and savour the varied cuisine offered by the terraces and restaurants in San Gregorio. A perfect way to round off a day of shopping.
